This is Dick's recording of the 2nd big aftershock today - originally registered at 6.9 and later downgraded to 6.7. Sudden motion sensors surrounding the hard drives in Macintosh computers are used to record the seismic motion of earthquakes.

Be sure to check out the older posts for earthquake photos.

Thanks to all for their concerns for our safety and well-being!

Arrival Home - Tuesday Night

We finally arrived Tuesday night back in Santiago, 240 miles NNE of the epicenter. We were among the very lucky - a little shaken up and nervous, but no injuries. Our apartment building is still sound and damage was limited to half a dozen broken glasses, closets having disgorged their contents and numerous small cracks in the floors, walls and ceilings. The elevators and gas both came back on just in time for our return. Frequently interrupted cell phone service is now available (Friday) in Santiago to about 80% of the phones. Internet connections are relatively good, but cut out from time to time. Most stores are up and running with the exception of many liquor stores whose stock was decimated by breakage. Our local full service supermarket was nearly half empty of merchandise on Wednesday, but most of the shelves were full on our visit to a bigger one yesterday.
